    Question

have an old projector and a pile of tapes. Want to turn them into VHS but would like to view first (put in order) etc. before I hand them over to a professional. Cannot even figure out how to load the film into projector. Any thoughts?

Have them transferred rather than viewing them and risk scratches or breaks. Use any order at all, just so they get in some recorded order or other, perhaps by numbering the boxes with nonstick tape and a marker. View the transfer, have them reordered or do it yourself if you have a NLE.
I could do all of that for you and more. My web site has a transfer section. www.16mmoviemaking.com

You might consider looking at www.ebay.com for a cheap super-8 viewer. You can easily "see" what you have, and as a "machine", they are about as simple to figure out as anything can get. Plus, since you will crank by hand, no projector motor/gate will mangle your film.

Set the projector up to project on to a screen about 6 inches diagonal.

Set up camcorder beside projector and video image. For VHS it is best to have the camcorder connected directly to a VHS recorder.

Better still record onto a computer and save as VCD or even DVD.

If you are rich there a plenty of slightly better, but more expensive ways. But if it is just home movies then the DIY methods are fine.
